{"id":114337,"date":"2026-05-19T11:19:51","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T08:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sfee.gr\/?p=114337"},"modified":"2026-05-20T09:29:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T06:29:32","slug":"may-20-2026-international-clinical-trials-day-clinical-trials-are-an-investment-in-the-countrys-health-innovation-and-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sfee.gr\/en\/may-20-2026-international-clinical-trials-day-clinical-trials-are-an-investment-in-the-countrys-health-innovation-and-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"May 20, 2026 | International Clinical Trials Day: Clinical trials are an investment in the country\u2019s health, innovation, and economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Athens, 19 May 2026.- <\/strong>On the occasion of <strong>International Clinical Trials Day<\/strong> (20 May), the <strong>Hellenic Association of Pharmaceutical Companies<\/strong> (SFEE) is once again highlighting the strategic role of clinical research for patients, the health system and the national economy, at a time of increasing international challenges and intense competition to attract investment.<\/p>\n<p>The current international environment is characterized by geopolitical instability, supply chain restructuring, rising energy costs, inflationary pressures and stricter regulatory frameworks in Europe. At the same time, pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement policies, as well as the ongoing underfunding of public pharmaceutical expenditure, significantly affect the predictability and investment dynamics of the healthcare sector.<\/p>\n<p>Within this environment, clinical trials are evolving into a field of intense international competition. Europe is gradually losing ground to the United States and China, while Greece has also experienced a slowdown in attracting new clinical trials in recent years, despite the high scientific workforce and the capabilities of its healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, Greece continues to underperform relative to its potential in the field of clinical trials, with investments remaining stagnant at levels lower than those of comparable countries. According to available data, investments in clinical trials in Greece in 2025 amounted to approximately \u20ac160<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><\/a> million \u2013 a figure significantly below the country\u2019s actual potential, which could be several times higher under a more competitive and stable institutional framework. At the same time, the benefits for the healthcare system, patients, and the economy are clear and multifaceted, both in terms of access to innovation and savings of resources, as well as the strengthening of scientific activity.<\/p>\n<p>SFEE once again emphasizes that clinical trials generate highly significant benefits, as they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>provide patients with early access to innovative therapies several years before their market launch,<\/li>\n<li>financially and scientifically support public hospitals and researchers,<\/li>\n<li>contribute to retaining highly specialized human capital within the country,<\/li>\n<li>and create substantial savings for the healthcare system through the free provision of costly therapies and diagnostic\/laboratory tests conducted within the framework of the studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although significant institutional improvements have been made in areas such as reducing bureaucracy, standardizing procedures, shortening timelines, etc., challenges remain regarding the introduction of incentives for attracting clinical trials, specifically:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Eligible beneficiaries: Foreign parent companies conducting studies directly in Greece from abroad, rather than through their local subsidiaries, are not considered eligible beneficiaries, despite being key drivers of international clinical development programs.<\/li>\n<li>Budgets: There is no provision for a distinct offset mechanism for R&amp;D and productive investments, limiting the targeted support of clinical research.<\/li>\n<li>Implementation time constraints: The requirement to complete at least 70% of the physical and financial scope of projects by the end of 2028 does not reflect the nature of clinical trials, which often last 3\u20135 years and reach their operational peak toward the end of their implementation period.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Commenting on the matter, SFEE Director General, Mr. Michael Himonas, stated: \u201c<em>A multinational company may choose any country in which to conduct clinical trials. If these studies are not carried out in Greece, they will be conducted elsewhere. The real loser, however, is the Greek patient, who is deprived of timely access to innovative therapies that may only become widely available on the market up to 10 years later. At the same time, the healthcare system loses the opportunity to provide modern and high-cost treatments without burdening the State, while the national economy is deprived of valuable investments, new highly specialized jobs, and significant scientific activity. Strengthening clinical trials is not merely a growth priority. It is a strategic public health choice that directly affects patients\u2019 access to innovation, the sustainability of the healthcare system, and the competitiveness of the Greek economy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><\/a> <a
